How to Maximize Space in Your Small Closet
Do you have that one closet in the hallway or bedroom that never seems to have enough room? If you live in a tiny apartment or condo the chances are you only have one or maybe two closets, therefore, it wouldn’t hurt to try to maximize the limited storage space you currently have. At times storage space can seem like a luxury that unfortunately a lot of us do not have. So we decided to compile our top tips and tricks to help you maximize the space in your closet whether you use it for linens, clothes, jackets, bags, or even shoes.
Take the Time to Declutter
A good place to start when finding new ways to create storage space is by decluttering your belongings. You’d be surprised at how much space you actually have when you are done. You can do this process with any of your belongings including bedsheets, towels, shoes, jackets, sweaters, socks, etc. Go through all your belongings in your closet and ask yourself the following questions:
- Is this an item that I wear or use often?
- Do I already have a belonging that serves a similar purpose?
- Does this belonging have added value to my life?
Asking yourself these questions will help you determine which items to keep and which ones to get rid of.
Over the Door Hooks
Hooks that go right over the door are perfect for clothes that you use on a daily basis because they can be easily reachable. For example, you can place your most commonly worn jackets and sweaters. That way you won’t have to go digging for these items in your closet and potentially dropping everything else you have placed on hangers. You can place these hooks over the door in a way that you can hang your clothing pieces from the outside or can access from opening the closet door.
Don’t forget about all that floor space at the bottom of your closet! You may have already been using the floor space in your closet, but is it being effectively used? If not, it is always a good idea to place more storage underneath/on the floor. For example, add a dresser that is small enough to fit in your closet. That way you can effectively use the inside storage as well as the top space. Another example would be using a shoe rack and place that in your closet to organize all of your shoes.
Shelves on Top
Put items on the top shelf that you do not need on a day-to-day basis. This space can be perfect for seasonal belongings including winter hats and scarves that you can store away during the warm months. A perfect way to keep this top section organized is by using storage bins and containers. Try labeling them as well so it is easy to keep track of what is in what and where it is.
If you are in need of more storage space and cannot seem to fit everything in your closet or elsewhere in your house look into self-storage. Self-storage can be the ideal storage solution for any seasonal belongings that you do not need at home all year round.
